ATHENS : a city in Greece |
In
the ancient times, Greece was not a single country. It was composed of
several little states which were independent and rival. Each city was
composed of a fortress, surrounded by land. Thus, the
district of Athens extended over the whole of Attica. In
spite of competition between the cities, the Greeks had a sense of
unity thanks to their culture which set them apart from the other adjacent
tribes: the barbarians. The Greeks spoke the same language, had the same
history, that of Homer, possessed the same hand-writing, the same gods,
had the same festivals and the same enemies: the Persians. |
